Highest Mountainbiking at 7000 meters on Mustagh Ata in China done in June 2000 beats record

Quest Center Wah-Lum Kung-Fu students win in Karate tournament in NE PA

Mental disorder finally made its way into my life in July, 1998 after I had cycled from Lhasa to half between Everest Base Camp and Advanced Base Camp from the Tibetan side. The sight of this great mountain, together with my surprising lack of fatigue, made me decide to try to break the *world record cycling at high altitude.

A quick check on the Internet told me that the existing world record was 6,960 meters and that it was set on Mt. Aconcagua (Argentina) in 1991. A close friend then told me that the ideal mountain on which to break this record would be Mustagh Ata (Xinjiang Province, China): with its altitude of 7,546 meters and fairly gradual slope, it is considered to be the easiest peak above 7,000 meters in the world.

In October of 1999, I decided to try my luck on the Internet and posted a message looking for climbing partners on the major mountaineering websites in the world, including MountainZone.com. The response was great: all-in-all, 12 people from all over the planet said they wanted to join. Some of them were dreamers, and others couldn't cough up the cash, so by June of 2000 a small but inspired group of six people was left: Jim, a professor emeritus from the Uni-

versity of Michigan; Stijn and Peter, two students from Holland; Martin, a student and cyclist from Denmark; Luc, a kindergarten teacher and cyclist from Belgium; and myself, trade commissioner and cyclist, also from Belgium.

What does it mean to do mountainbiking at 7000m ?

Clearing some snow – biking a few yards – falling – getting up and again ! Kind of futile ! But what the heck tells us the official from the Belgium government working in China – they made it to about 7000m and beat the world record of 6960m by about 40 meters ! ! They are currently filing a registration with the Guinness book of world-records.

Almost every student from the Wah Lum Kung Fu school won a prize. All in all 6 prizes among them 2 first places, 2 second and 2 third places were won. A remarkable feat, considering the majority of karate students present.

Mind over matter – what does it mean ?

At about noon, there was a remarkable demonstration done by master Eric Kowaleski, leader of one of the Tang So (cont. below left - click here)

All in all a nice experience it was&ldots; The most difficult part was to carry the bikes on the back at high altitude. It kind of drags, they say, especially when the air is thin and every move seems like being under water without air. Lifting the bike and handling it becomes like a major exercise. Are there any elevations in the world at that altitude without a cover of several feet of snow ? Why bring bikes up there ? Only some crazy guys can do it ! ! Cont. from Wah-Lum Kung-Fu(mind over matter) :

...Tang So Do schools in the NE Pennsylvania area. He pierced two needles through the skin of his lower arms and then two buckets of water were suspended on to it. And if that was not enough, he walked on two razor-sharp swords without getting cut and without any sign of wounds.

In India, this would have been nothing out of the ordinary, as there are literally thousands of so-called “sadhus” who exhibit sitting on nail-beds, hanging extremely heavy objects on their private parts and walking on fire. This is simply the ability to project Prana or “Chi” as commonly known to certain sections of your body and using it for special abilities.

Is it a useful skill ?

It is a double edged sword, as power can be used for good and bad. The key is to achieve balance. How do you master your anger in a hostile environment ? How do you overcome fear ? These are challenges that could be far more difficult. The ancient yogis experimented on themselves and found a system of 50 sounds through which one could control all the 50 mental propensities. Gaining control over chi or prana is therefore only a beginning, a usefull skill, but it is just like awakening a dragon with a thousand heads that will start pulling you in all its directions. Therefore the yogis know about the thousand-petaled lotus chakra or the crown chakra, a power-center situated at the crown of the head which controls all human propensities. The goal of yogis is to achieve perfect harmony with the universe and a resultant transcendent state of mind. Much too often also, yogis have been caught up in just doing that, forgetting the suffering humanity and have become outcasts of society. But in the Ananda Marga way of life a major part of the energy is dedicated to help suffering humanity with volunteer programs in under-developed countries and service activities. Therefore its motto is two-fold:

Self-realization and Service to humanity

Poor or Rich ?

One day a very wealthy father took his young son on a trip to the country with the firm purpose of showing him the level of poverty in which some people live. They spent a day and a night at the farm of a very poor family.

When they got back from their trip the father asked his son, "How was the trip?"

"Very good, dad."

"Did you see how poor people can be?" the father asked.

"Yeah."

"And what did you learn?"

The son answered, "I saw that we have a dog at home and they have four. We have a pool that reaches to the middle of the garden, they have a creek that has no end. We have imported lamps in our garden, they have the stars. Our patio reaches to the front yard, they have the whole horizon.”

When the little boy was finished, his father was speechless.

His son added, "Thanks Dad for showing me how poor we are."

Isn't it true that it all depends on the way you look at things? If you have love, friends, family, health, good humor and a positive attitude towards life you've got everything. You can't buy any of these things. You can have all the material possessions you can imagine, provisions for the future, etc., but if you are poor of spirit, you have nothing.

Happiness is to want what you get !”
